Have you ever seen newsstands selling things adjacent to their space? For example, a cooler of soda from a crate placed on the sidewalk out front? Of course you have. Did you know that is in violation of "Title 6 of the rules of the City of New York, section 2-66(a)?" It is. And for whatever reason, this newsstand on 86th and Lexington Street might be the only one in New York City singled out for doing so.
After finishing up a gig last month, musician Derek Beres of the band EarthRise SoundSystem stopped into Punjabi Grocery & Deli at 114 1st St between 1st Ave and Ave A. "The saag is spiced perfectly, the gulab jamun not too sweet," Beres explained, "and vocals ring out non-stop through the night."
He ordered his food and stood at the counter ready to eat, tapping out a beat. What followed was an amazing impromptu performance of Bhangra.
Photographed on the corner of Varick and Watts Streets last night, Maurice was happily washing the windshields of commuters heading into the Holland Tunnel, singing along to the music playing in his headphones while his wife sat nearby.
Are squeegee men making a return to New York City? They were last seen on the corner of Bleecker and Bowery by EV Grieve in June. Before that, they were last seen in 1995.

YouTube user khemist49 uploaded a video last week filmed on 34th Street and 5th Avenue, showing what appears to be three young adults attacking one man. At the five second mark, you can hear a passerby ask someone in reference to the man outnumbered: "Are you gonna help him?" The situation looks bleak as the attacked retreats into the road and in front of a taxi, dodging multiple blows along the way.
Rats have completely overrun Collect Pond Park (map) a public park the Lower Manhattan Construction Command Center has conceded is "part dilapidated plaza, part Department of Transportation parking lot."
Passing through the park last night across from the Criminal Courthouse in downtown Manhattan, an NYPD officer expressed resigned anger at the rats overrunning the park. "Look at that thing," he exclaimed, pointing and shaking his head in disgust, "it's as big as a cat!"
Collect Pond Park is effectively a rat zoo now. Watch the video below.

On the street over the weekend, a man stood on 1st Avenue in the East Village wearing an outfit so perfect it gave me pause. High fashion bohemia masquerading as 1920 thrift store? And the way it was all put together was extraordinary. The colors, the fabric, the textures. Layered perfectly, one complimenting the next. Even little details like turquoise gems and gold jewelry were accounted for. In a final gesture, a scarf with fringe was draped around his neck.
I walked by and stared at him. “I love your outfit,” spilled out of my mouth. He looked behind himself, then looked at me again, a smile cracking his face. “Yah, yours” I told him, “it’s amazing.”
He lit up. “Its Yves St Laurent from 1920,” he gleefully explained, pawing his scarf and becoming animated. “I was on the Titantic. I modeled for the Beatles. I’m friends with Patti Smith. I was a model in the 70s.”
"I want to take you picture, may I?" He told me he was in a car accident a few years ago, “that’s why.”
“That’s why what?” I asked.
“That’s why I wear these things. In case I ever get hit by a car again and die.”

Are there secret pools in empty industrial lots of Williamsburg, Brooklyn? The answer seems to be yes, but they are no secret to fan of the internet Anna Grimm. Anna spied this one from her perch in Williamsburg the other day, (note the photo at left) covered in a green tarp. Click through for clear view of the ladder leading up and into the pool.
You might recall last years media attention on the secret dumpster pools of Macro-Sea, which led to the location being revealed: "near the corner of Bond Street and Carroll Street in Brooklyn." The pool seen here is in a different location, and from the looks of it, is not a Macro-Sea dumpster pool. NYC The Blog inquired as much via email, which they did not immediately respond to.
So where is the pool seen here? Glad you asked. Let's look from space.
New York City's Cupcake Economy is coming to Nolita in a big way with a head to head battle between two heavyweights. Over the weekend, Brooklyn's Little Cupcake Bakeshop hung their flag on 30 Prince Street (seen at right) announcing a fall arrival in the space formerly occupied by Kitchen Club, and currently undergoing an extended renovation.
This is an episode on Cupcake Wars just waiting to happen. As Bruce Zipes of Bruce's Bakery in Great Neck recently said: "If you wanna be a General in the cupcake wars, you betta be mentally, phyisically, emotionally ready, willing and able."

The East Village's Stromboli Pizza at St Marks Place and 1st Avenue (map) is offering a new lunch spical. Two slices of pizza and a soda for $5.00. That's a pretty good lunch spical if you ask me.
