Community Association Forms In Northern Little Italy

The determined sounding Northern Little Italy Community Association is a new neighborhood group formed to keep the 'hood "safe, quiet, clean and green." Next meeting is Tuesday, 6:30 pm at 263 Mulberry, the Parish House of Old St. Patrick's  (map).

Will Hotel Toshi and 168 Elizabeth be on the agenda, and/or Village Tart's request for sidewalk tables? An email to NLICA inquiring about their meeting and organization was not returned.

NYCTB is also curious if Northern Little Italy shares the same geography as NoLiTa, and if not, what streets does NLICA encompass?

Village Tart Seeks Permit For Sidewalk Cafe

A public hearing will be held tonight at the NYU Silver Building at 32 Waverly Place, Room 206 (map) to address a request by Village Tart, opened earlier this year on the corner of Kenmare and Mulberry, seeking a permit for an unenclosed sidewalk cafe for ten tables and 20 seats.

The outdoor seating, if approved, will be a stones throw away from neighboring La Esquina's popular sidewalk tables and will further Kenmare Street's new reincarnation as a Restaurant Row, as Bowery Boogie labeled it recently

City Shuts Down 'Cheap Shots' Bar With A Leg Drop From Top Turnbuckle

Cheap Shots, a "balls-out dive bar with rock-bottom drink specials" at 140 First Ave between 9th St. & St. Marks Place, was slapped with two court orders yesterday shutting the place for "illegal activities."

After serving underage auxiliary police officers on at least three occasions as of late, as well as being the scene of a couple of physical kerfuffles, the City of New York had enough. Allison L Arenson, attorney in the office of the Legal Bureau of the Police Department and plaintiff in this case, has laid out the city's case in pages of arguments, which were laying on the sidewalk out front.

After posting about a potential new Hotel Toshi unit on Mott Street, Robert Chan, proprietor of Hotel Toshi, called NYC The Blog for a little chat and to offer information about his plans in Nolita, specifically at 280 Mulberry Street and on Mott Street, and imparted surprising news...

From Street Trash To Street Art

One enterprising artist took the opportunity to use a number of doors and other wood panels laying about Little Italy on trash day for canvas, painting at least four in one evening. Two were still there the next day. I wonder if any enterprising residents continued the cycle of opportunity by taking one and giving it a new home inside their apartment? See a photo of another piece that didn't quite make it through the night below.

Top Secret Photos Of World Cup Pop Up Store In Nolita

These photos of a World Cup pop up store at 201 Mulberry Street were snapped yesterday under duress, and without the approval of the women working inside Open House, a retail space rented out for events, short term retail and pop up stores. L'internet tells us that an organization called PlayBeautiful will open the space on June 11 20 for a World Cup "pop-up viewing-hub." There was quite a bit of merchandise on the sales floor as well.

When the aforementioned women noticed me taking photos, she quickly exited the store to ask me if could help, and to request that I refrain from taking photos. When I explained my intent to take photos of the storefront, just a couple to document the neighborhood, she asked, "for who?" Either way, she continued, taking photographs of the store was not allowed. Explaining that it was indeed permissible in public, and that I didn't mean any harm, I took one more photo. At that, she immediately dialed someone on the phone to explain the situation and learn the next course of action.

Memory Lane: Here is video footage of Mulberry Street shortly after Italy won the World Cup in 2006. Believe it or not, the celebration had really settled down when that clip was filmed.

UPDATED: Hotel Toshi "Invades" Nolita?

Hot on the heels of a "misunderstanding" about plans for 168 Elizabeth Street, flyers posted around Little Italy and Nolita are raising the alarm over Hotel Toshi—run by "former sex party promoter, Robert Chan." According to the flyer, Hotel Toshi has landed in Nolita, though no affirming information was provide. Hotel Toshi's website does contain a listing for a 3 bedroom at "Prime Soho Mott" with pictures coming soon.

NYC The Blog emailed Hotel Toshi last night inviting them to add any information they felt was relevant. The post will be updated with any response received. UPDATED: Robert Chan telephones with more information.

FREE Things To Do In NYC This Summer: Live On The 6 Train!

All I want to know is how does he get it on and off at each stop, in time...and then up and down the stairs or elevators?! Impossible, right? There were two large containers, by the way, chock full of large and bulky items.

UPDATE: (Now With Video) Banksy In Dumbo Finished

Graffiti writer Omar, no fan of Banksy, finished what he started—obliterating Banksy pieces hours after they went up—finally making it out to Dumbo on the corner of Jay and Water Street (map) to desecrate what might be the last remaining Banksy lovingly stenciled during the celebrated culture jammer's latest twirl through town.

UPDATE: Now with video; Watch Omar do this in the middle of the day.

Build Your Own Taxi

New York City taxi cabs in need of repair can make their way over to West 44th Street between 10th and 11th where a cluster of auto body and mechanical repair shops make their living. Anyone looking to customize their own motor vehicles with an iconic yellow cab fender or hood could also check the dumpsters out front.

The taxis pulling in for repair look a bit different from the envisioned taxis of the future.

Also interesting, West 44th Street runs directly over what I think is the Amtrack line, which passes through underneath; you can see the rail lines from either side of the street. Check it out on Google Street View.

All you can eat sushi for $32.00 at Ikura in the East Village, but never mind that. More importantly: it is all you can drink for $40.00, including tax and tip. If those troublesome college kids running amuck in the neighborhood had any self-respect they would be trying to, and succeeding, in getting their moneys worth at Ikura. Kids Bikes For Sale Outside Whole Foods On Houston Street

The two kids bikes seen above were locked to racks outside Whole Foods on Houston Street over the weekend, for sale at $40.00 and $30.00 respectively. For those unaware, children's bikes are a great mode of transportation to quickly and agilely get around your neighborhood. They have the added bonus of being small and lightweight, easy to carry in and out of any residence.

McNewYork: McDonald's Walk Thru Window Comes To Manhattan

McDonald's has added a walk-thru window to their location at 14th and 1st in "mcnewyork." Witnesses have seen the window utilized, with people queuing in lines even. "There is a legit line of people at the walk-thru at the McDonalds on 14th," tweeted Sam Wagner.

Associate Editor Samantha Murphy happened upon the walk-thru service and snapped a photo of an actual customer at the window waiting for an assumed delicious hamburger and apple pie. New Turning Lane For Cyclists Introduced On Bowery At Prince Street

The New York City DOT recently finished a new turn lane for cyclists turning west onto Prince from Bowery. The lane provides riders a path on the right side of traffic turning west, allowing bikes a safe route for their own west turn. Previous, it was normal for cyclists to migrate to the left lane of traffic on Bowery before continuing west onto Prince, a not entirely safe situation for anyone, particularly with barely any median to speak of and other lanes of traffic traveling southbound on Bowery, as Cyclosity pointed out.

Below, see a helpful primer with photographs displaying incorrect and correct use of the new turn lane. Because otherwise all your friends from the Netherlands will laugh at you for not knowing how to cycle properly.
