Are ATM Thieves Absconding With $136,000 Per Machine?

The New York Post reports brazen ATM thieves have struck numerous street ATMs below 14th Street: "...escaping with thousands of dollars in cash during their three-month crime spree, in which they used crowbars and even a Cadillac to haul away the machines." (See video of one such heist here).

Are these recent strings of ATM thefts netting the thieves $136,000 each machine? Probably not, but it is possible. $30,000 is likely, and hauls of $10,000 plus per machine should be presumed. Here's why:

After witnessing the replenishing of ATMs in an interior location and guestimating the amount of cash being deposited at $60,000, NYC The Blog looked into how much money these ATM's that seem to dot every other corner in Manhattan might be holding.

Information readily available online at websites for ATM wholesalers confirmed the estimates above.

New Graffiti On Houston Street And It Is Not's Shepard Fairey

Spied this morning on the NE corner of Mott and Houston was the relatively large and (new?) work signed by BTM, seen above. Far left says "Wild Bill."

UPDATE 06.14.10: Luna Park fills in the blanks on the artist: Seedr.

The paint still appeared to be wet at 8.30am and is only two blocks west of the Deitch Wall on Houston that was recently papered over by noted sticker artist and t-shirt designer Shepard Fairey. A crossing guard on the corner couldn't provide and clues as to when the work appeared, as it was her first morning manning this corner making sure pedestrians were safe from the speeding traffic on Houston!

UPDATE 04.23.10: A friend informs me they noticed this piece last week.

ATM Watch On 145th St. -- First There Was One, Now There Are Two

Yesterday's report on the first free-standing exterior ATM on 145th St might not have been entirely accurate, as this ATM machine that has appeared just a few doors down can attest. Neither were there last week, and which one arrived first is unclear, though they are both new. Either way, in one week 145th St has received two free-standing exterior ATM machines, bringing the street up to date with street furniture that is ubiquitous on streets having a high population of of people who have ATM cards, and like to use them, even it is on a corner known recently for forceful removal of your property.
